Sam, I had given away my hamsters last month when I moved to a new state.

Apparently, the family that I gave the hamsters to had also given them away since one of their kids had suddenly developed some sort of skin allergies after playing with the hamsters.

I can't remember what kind of wood shaving I used for the cage but I agree that paper shavings are better - and probably more practical for the hamsters anyway.

From my experience, I can just put the paper and the hamsters will shave it themselves :D

I have a hamster and i know what you mean. You said they were wood shavings right? Well, if the shavings are made out of Cedar or Pine GET RID OF IT! I read that many pet shops will sell cedar or pine shavings and say that there fine to use when in fact there not. They both contain phenols which are harmful to hamsters overtime. I sugest toilet paper or paper shavings.
